About Angeliki’s Research:

During Greece’s democratic transition (Metapolitefsi) following the fall of the military junta in 1974, feminist movements brought reproductive rights and gender equality to the forefront of political and social debate. How did Greek feminism emerge as an innovative social movement, and what was the significance of reproductive rights campaigns within this context? This project will examine feminist activism in Greece from 1975 to 1993, a pivotal period for reproductive rights, focusing on how feminist groups advocated for contraception and abortion in a society steeped in sexual conservatism and Orthodox tradition. Using oral histories, feminist publications, and archival materials, it aims to explore how grassroots movements navigated these societal barriers to achieve significant reforms, including the 1986 Abortion Act. Situating Greek feminist activism within transnational networks, this research will highlight how global feminist ideas were adapted to address local challenges and contexts. By addressing a gap in European feminist historiography, this thesis will demonstrate the transformative role of Greek feminists in reshaping norms surrounding citizenship, family, and healthcare. It aims to contribute fresh perspectives to global discussions on reproductive rights while offering a nuanced understanding of feminist movements during a pivotal era in Greek history.
