Human Creativity in Generative Artificial Intelligence: To Diverse Collective Novelty in Sketching
Jiawen Li is an interdisciplinary artist and PhD researcher in the School of Innovation and Technology at Glasgow School of Art, interested in Generative Artificial Intelligence and human creativity in the visual field.

This showcase presented a live exploration of human-AI collaborative sketching through an interactive Wizard of Oz experiment. During the showcase, participants engaged in paired drawing sessions where one person simulated an AI assistant, creating a real-time collaborative sketching experience. This approach offered participants firsthand insight into the potential dynamics of human-AI creative partnerships.

The research activity featured two distinct sketching scenarios. In the first phase, participants created artwork independently to establish a baseline. In the second phase, they collaborated with a simulated AI partner, taking turns adding elements to their evolving artwork.

This interactive demonstration forms part of broader research investigating how iterative interactions and remote association between humans and AI might support creative expression while preserving authentic artistic agency. The showcase offered a unique opportunity to observe and document how people naturally approach creative collaboration with AI, contributing to the guidance of creative support tools.
