My research will be the first serious analysis of the ways in which visual culture can reveal the range of women’s wartime roles in the First World War. It will use an interdisciplinary methodology to interrogate the role of visual culture in the complex construction of women’s experiences and identities during war and privilege the artwork produced by women. By engaging with a diverse group of sources and organisations, this research will reassess the range of visual vocabularies presented to the public and inform a re-examination of public historical education that promotes visual tropes beyond the heroic nurse and munitions worker.
