Syncretic Spiritual Synergies: Charting the Occult Turn in Healing Impact of Latin American Contemporary Art 1980 – present

About Tasmin’s Research:

The occult turn within Latin American art has prompted exploration into healing practices by artists on an individual and collective basis, however, this area remains under-researched in Latin American cultural studies. This project considers artists and collectives from Argentina, Cuba and Mexico, and their return towards the occult and ritual from 1980 – present, seeking to ask if art can be used to heal fractures within contemporary society, particularly: rampant gender inequality, femicide and oppressive socio-political structures. Community engagement is a key focus of the project: research outputs will be accessible in an online ‘healing archive’: a body of research materials providing knowledge on community building, collective organising and the transformative, healing power of art.
