About Victoria’s Research:
My research seeks to better understand the unique ways in which nomadic communities are able to engage with, resist, and leverage state authority for their own benefit. By using a combination of ceramic sourcing, site location analysis, and ethnography, this project studies the incorporation of Mongolian pastoral nomads into the Kitan-Liao Empire (916–1125 AD). I aim to address the ways in which state management impacted the lives of these pastoral nomadic communities and to what extent imperial subjection and nomadic consent were negotiated in the making of these changes.
