About Cait’s Research:

The PhD examines the cultural politics of Empire within the Scottish landscape between 1707-2007. It contributes to a major reappraisal of Scotland’s commemoration of Empire and answers a question of contemporary pertinence: how did Scots ‘forget’ their colonial history when it was so pervasive at the time?

The project traces the creation of the memory of Empire in Dumfries & Galloway, Lanarkshire, Orkney, Perthshire, and Ross & Cromarty through a critical analysis of archival, cultural, and spatial ‘sites of memory,’ from the colonial moment to the memorialised present.
