About Cian’s Research:

Mapping Memorial Books will focus on the post-war cycle of Jewish commemorative writing created by survivors in the aftermath of the Holocaust. From the 1940s onwards, over 1,000 memorial books appeared, depicting the lost Jewish communities of Europe. Many were written in Yiddish, a language largely inaccessible to the public. By cross-referencing archival records of the Scottish Jewish community with the corpus of Yizkor books, this project will map Jewish immigration in Scotland back to its ancestral towns. Employing this archive for the first time, the project aims to add depth and nuance to the study of pre-war Jewish life and Holocaust memory.
