My research will explore scientific grant-making in Britain during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through the use of Royal Society archives, examining the diversity- or lack thereof- of the individuals, groups, organisations, and subject matters which came to benefit. This research will explore the ways in which a range of funds were administered by the Royal Society, with the aim of uncovering the processes of research evaluation and of determining their transparency and effectiveness.
