Sexualised Reappropriation of Non-Nude Social Media Content: Investigating the Knowledge and Experiences of Young People in Scotland

HEI: University of Strathclyde

Supervisors: Professor Karen Boyle and Dr Esperanza Miyake (University of Strathclyde)

Keywords: IBSA, TFSV, Privacy, Young People, Sexual Violence

About Emma’s Research:

Situated within the burgeoning scholarship on Image-Based Sexual Abuse (IBSA), Technology-Facilitated Sexual Violence (TFSV) and relative to contemporary debates about the use of AI, this project addresses an understudied form of IBSA.

Existing literature on IBSA and TFSV fails to account for the non-consensual reappropriation of social media users’ non-explicit images for sexualised distribution and discussion.

This research will critically examine the applicability of existing models of Image-Based Sexual Abuse (IBSA) and Technology-Facilitated Sexual Violence (TFSV) in accounting for novel and under-explored abusive digital conduct. Specifically, it will consider YP’s experiences of the non-consensual reappropriation of non-nude social media images for sexualised distribution and discussion.
