About Emma’s Research:

This project aims to answer the question: what should we do about desires which appear to sustain oppressive systems? I particularly focus on our aesthetic attitudes towards other human beings, examining who and what we find beautiful. I will explore the relations between our concept of beauty and gender, class, and health through the lens of feminist philosophy. I argue that our norms and social practices relating to beauty and bodies constitute an oppressive system. Ultimately, the project will give an account of the duties of individuals in oppressive systems like these.
