The Venezuelan Exodus, the second of the largest refugee crises in the world, has been little studied. This interdisciplinary project, drawing on literature, aesthetics and digital culture, will analyse representations of the Venezuelan exile as a means to reveal transnational ties within the diaspora and uncover broader problems around citizenship, the representation of refugees and the legacies of colonialism. Special attention will be paid to the intersection of gender, race and class, and the role of popular culture in representations of Venezuelan migrants; using concepts from performance and melodrama, diaspora studies and aesthetics.
