Through ethnographic investigation and close analysis of contemporary performance practices from Turkey, Lebanon and Iran, this project seeks to offer an alternative historiography of material performance practices. It draws on Middle Eastern practices including contemporary theatre that uses objects and puppets instead of human actors, and wider cultural practices that use objects to perform a set of interventions within social and political spheres. Consequently, it questions Western anthropocentric legacies and mobilises performance as a lens to explore and intervene in a politics of displacement and migration.
