A Visual Narrative Exploration of New Weird in the Context of the Information Age Using Surrealism as a ModelĀ

My research is practice-led and explores the potential for conveying the Weird atmosphere of New Weird Fiction through visual narratives in the context of the Information Age. The aim is to enhance the understanding and expansion of New Weird in contemporary visual arts. The current theoretical research investigates the evolution of Weird Fiction as a literary genre, its comparison with Gothic and Science Fiction, the influence of Surrealism, and the challenges of its visualisation.
The practice-led component presents two perspectives:
- Following Surrealism’s development in visual practice (e.g. employing automatist techniques), emphasising the sensation of Weird over narrative.
- Examining the impact of medium (e.g. internet forums) and presentation (e.g. layout) on forming a weird atmosphere.
This involves viewing computer-generated images as monstrous in the process of becoming, using AI to explore various limb types. Moreover, re-visualising narratives written through automatist techniques to generate Weird sensory imagery. These unexplored areas are the primary focus of my practice-led research.
