About Samuel’s Research:
While there has been extensive recent research conducted by museums in Glasgow to explore the city’s role within the British Empire and the legacies of imperialism today, the ways in which Glasgow’s museums responded to the advent of African independence from the mid 1950s have been seldom explored.
Focusing on Glasgow’s links with Nigeria, and through close engagement with the collections primarily of Glasgow Museums and the Hunterian, this PhD will assess the ways in which the continued collecting, conservation and display of Nigerian material both reflected and helped to shape changing attitudes towards Africa in the postcolonial era.
