About Ashley’s Research:
Taking Scottish academics as a separate social group, this project analyses divergent, yet co-existing, masculine practices at universities in St Andrews, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh between 1560 and 1606: a period where significant changes across Scotland resulted in major transformations for these institutions and their role in society. Using gender theory, particularly focussed on the field of masculinity studies, I aim to take a new approach in analysing how Scottish masters performed their roles and how they impacted students. I am working to demonstrate how academic masculinities interacted, how they influenced wider Scottish society, and related to European movements. I also am keen to provide insight into gender practices at universities today through the study of early modern academic practices.
