About Rebecca’s Research:

With the support of a supervisory team from the schools of history and law, this interdisciplinary project aims to apply queer methodologies to a source base of Scottish court records. In doing so, I am seeking to disrupt binary notions of normativity and transgression as they pertain to the control and expression of female sexuality in 19th century Scotland. Rather than searching for ‘queer subjects’, this project aims to consider discourses of race, class, and (dis)ability in tandem with the legal and social categorisation of sexuality within official court documentation.
