About Tobey’s Research:
Women’s experimental art in the socialist states of East-Central Europe from 1970 to 1989 has received less attention in feminist art historical scholarship compared to developments since 1989. Using archival research and interviews with artists and curators, the PhD explores if and how women artists’ work, produced in contexts with a tentative relationship to market demands, can feed into the histories of transnational feminist thought. By examining the limits of artistic autonomy beyond market dictates (e.g. in relation to state demands and gender relations), the PhD contributes to a counter-hegemonic art history that addresses situated paradigms of women’s contribution to culture.
